There is a moment that happens in a lot of product development conversations.
Someone from R&D explains something genuinely interesting. A new formulation. A new mechanism. A new way of delivering an ingredient. A measurable improvement in performance. Everyone around the table understands that it is important.
Then someone asks how it can be shown so everyone would understand the importance.
It sounds simple. It isn't. Because making something understandable is very different from explaining it.
And this is where there is an opportunity to build a skill that doesn't get nearly enough attention: the ability to think in demonstrations. Not just to make a demo when one is needed, but to recognise the possibility of a demo in the first place.
We like to think of it as a muscle. And like any muscle, it can be trained.
The Science Is Often the Easy Part
The irony is that companies already have an incredible amount of material to work with. R&D teams spend months, sometimes years, developing technologies and formulations. Marketing teams know how to turn a product benefit into something people can relate to. There is no shortage of knowledge.
The interesting challenge is bringing those perspectives together in a way that makes the product easier for someone outside the organisation to understand.
This is particularly true when the most important product benefits are not immediately visible. A new formulation might improve hydration. A cleaning technology might work through several different mechanisms. An ingredient may have a specific mode of action that is scientifically interesting but difficult to explain in everyday language.
The science can be perfectly clear to the people who developed it and still be difficult for a consumer to grasp. That is where a demonstration can be incredibly powerful. It creates a bridge between what the product does and what people can understand.
From Explaining to Experiencing
Most product claims are communicated through words. They appear on packaging, websites, advertising, presentations and sales materials. Sometimes the language is very simple. Sometimes it becomes quite technical. Either way, the consumer is generally being asked to understand what the product does based on an explanation.
A demonstration provides another way into the story. Instead of describing a change, it can allow someone to see it. Instead of explaining a difference, it can allow them to compare it. It can create an experience that helps the person understand what is happening.
This doesn't mean replacing scientific evidence with something more entertaining. Quite the opposite. The strongest demonstrations are usually built around a sound understanding of the science. The science provides the foundation. The demonstration provides a way of communicating it.
That distinction matters. The objective isn't to make the science less sophisticated. It is to make the result of that science easier to understand.
A Demo Gym of Sorts
That is where the idea behind our demo upskilling workshops comes from. A demo gym of sorts.

The concept is based on a fairly simple observation: people get better at spotting demo opportunities by practising.
In a workshop setting, for example, a team might take a technical claim and look at it from several different perspectives. What is actually happening? What part of that process could potentially be observed? Is there a measurable change? Could a consumer interact with the result?
The objective isn't necessarily to leave the session with a finished demonstration. The value can be in developing a different way of looking at product science. Over time, that way of thinking can become more natural.
A scientist may start recognising that a particular mechanism could lend itself to a visual demonstration. A consumer scientist may identify an area where consumers struggle to understand a product benefit and consider whether an experience could help. A marketer may start looking beyond the claim itself and think about how the consumer could encounter it.
Why Bringing Different Perspectives Together Matters
A demonstration rarely belongs entirely to one discipline. Each perspective contributes something different.
When those perspectives are brought together early enough in the thinking process, the team can start exploring possibilities that might otherwise remain separate. A technical claim becomes a starting point rather than the finished communication. A consumer insight can become a question to investigate. A product benefit can become something to experience rather than simply something to read about.
This is particularly relevant in categories such as FMCG, beauty and pharma, where products often rely on technical benefits that are difficult to observe directly. The more complex the science becomes, the more important the translation between science and consumer understanding becomes. Leaving that translation until the end is exactly where the hidden cost of late demo thinking tends to appear.
Demos Can Also Create Conversations
There is another dimension to this that is easy to overlook. A demonstration can give people something to respond to.
In a retail environment, it might encourage someone to stop and interact with a product. In a pharmacy, it might help create a more useful conversation between a professional and a consumer. In an influencer experience, it can provide something tangible around which content can be created. In a sales environment, it can help turn an abstract claim into something that can be discussed.
The demo becomes part of the interaction rather than simply another communication asset. That makes the question of where and how a demo is used just as important as the demonstration itself.
A concept that works beautifully in a laboratory may not work in a store. Something designed for a trade show may need to be completely rethought for an e-commerce experience. Thinking about the eventual environment can therefore influence the idea from the beginning.
Developing Capability, Not Just Producing Assets
This is where the idea of a demo upskilling workshop becomes more interesting. The objective isn't simply to create more demonstrations. It is to help teams become more comfortable with the thinking that sits behind them.
That means understanding what makes a claim suitable for demonstration, knowing how to explore different scientific principles, considering the consumer experience and recognising where a demonstration could add value.
It also means becoming comfortable with experimentation. Some ideas will work. Others won't. Some will be technically difficult. Some will be too complicated. Some will look interesting but fail to communicate the intended benefit. That is normal. The value comes from having the opportunity to explore those possibilities before settling on the strongest one.
The important part is finding the right connection between the science and the experience. That is ultimately what developing the demo muscle is about.
Not making science less rigorous. Not creating demonstrations simply because they look impressive. But helping teams recognise when a product story could benefit from being experienced rather than explained, and giving them the skills to explore what that experience could look like.
That is a capability worth developing across R&D, consumer science and marketing.
And perhaps the best time to start developing that skill isn't when a demo is needed. It's when someone joins the team.
